The second week of the school year opened with all departments in our schools packed to the limit. High school enrollment is the largest by far… Enrollment had reached three hundred and twenty-four by noon Monday.

All roads lead to Viroqua next week – the occasion being the Vernon County Fair Society’s 66th Annual Fair. Elaborate plans have been made to make this the first event in the company’s history, and you’ll miss it if you miss it. Exhibitions in all departments are expected to set a record this year. The two free rides are guaranteed to be the best… a fast pack of horses ensures a ride that’s sure to please.

While in Hillsboro last week, Cyrus Butt had an experience that almost cost him his life. As he was walking down the street, he was attacked by an enraged overheated ox which then fell to his death. Cyrus was knocked to the ground and stomped on, but he eventually escaped with severe bruises and scared beyond words. Having only recovered from a three-week siege with an infected foot, he fears what will happen to him next.

Sonja Nelson, nine-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Art Nelson, was selected at the Vernon Theater to make the trip to St. Paul to see the championship rodeo, meet Gene Autry and have her photo taken. All expenses are borne by the St. Paul Chamber of Commerce, the Vernon County Censor, and the Vernon County Broadcaster.

The buildings and property of the Vernon County Fairgrounds have undergone extensive repairs over the past several months. Bert Henry and Archie Morrison have been busy most of the summer removing the old fence around the racetrack and replacing it with a fence that makes the entire racetrack visible from the grandstand. The floor that extended beyond the grandstand roof was replaced with new planks. More seats have been added, so they now come right up to the race track railing.

The Sylvia Cobb dance school of La Crosse and Winona will be giving dance lessons at Viroqua once a week from October 1st. All types of dance will be offered and teenagers as well as younger ones will be taken to separate classes.

According to official records she is on the prettiest girl in Wisconsin, in fact officially she was so proclaimed according to a message she was carrying from the mayor of Milwaukee. The young woman, Joanne Ruetten of Viroqua, brought the mayor a large cheese to draw attention to Wisconsin’s dairy centennial celebration in 1947. Along with the cheese came an ice cream cake, so the mayor took cheese and ice cream cake for lunch.

Local youth raised a total of $57,569.05 for their award-winning animals at the annual Vernon County Meat Animal Sale on Saturday night. During the auction, 100 animals were offered for sale: 32 steers, 2 rabbits, 2 chickens, 52 pigs and 12 lambs.

The Viroqua Blackhawks snapped a two-year drought against their county rivals on Friday night, beating the Westby Norsemen 22-6 at Westby.

Kijah Hanson, a member of the women’s cross country team, won silver at the Westby Invitational on Thursday, finishing just two seconds off first place.

Bob Tiffany of Viroqua, the 11th of 25 finalists in the Jubilee Food New Car Contest, tried his key and to his surprise the car started! This departure earned him the grand prize, a 1997 Dodge Neon.

Lukas Allen Yttri, was baptized in a christening robe worn by his great-great-grandfather, Scott Christian Sanwick in 1877. The robe belongs to grandmother Alice Ann Ekern-Yttri Olson. Lukas’ parents are Scott and Andrea Yttri from Westby. The baptism took place at the Westby-Coon Prairie Lutheran Church on August 24, 1997.

The “winner” of the ARTT kiss-a-pig contest was Pete Hollister. The money raised was $477.21. Lynn Fortun was second in the ballot.

The Vernon County Agricultural Society held a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Vernon Memorial Healthcare Expo Center on the Vernon County Fairgrounds on Saturday afternoon. Kevin Larson, Chairman of the Fundraising Committee for the Commercial Building said: “This building is the foresight of people from years gone by. Bob Fredrick had the dream for the building. Ken Deaver thanked Garith and Julie Steiner and Vernon Memorial Healthcare for being “community-minded people. One family had the “start-up capital” so to speak – the Ernest and Margaret Bringe family. Armand Bringe said: “Dad always wanted to do something for the community.”

The Town of Viroqua is repairing Municipal Well #5 and drilling Well #6. A new pump is needed for Well #5, located at Arena Drive. Work to install the new pump at well No. 5 was taking place on Tuesday. In preparation for the well repair, a press release was sent to local media advising the public to temporarily conserve water while the pump was installed.

The Vernon County Fair is a record holder! Preliminary estimates of admission receipts show the Vernon County Fair had a banner year. The previous record for admission revenue dates back to 2009, when good weather generated $82,900 in attendance revenue. Marohl said the preliminary estimate for this year’s fair will be around $84,000. One of the main attractions at the year’s fair was a lighted Ferris wheel from carnival supplier Mr. Ed’s Magic Midway. Marohl said visitors have reported being able to see miles of the Ferris wheel from the fairgrounds.
