PUBLIC NOTICE School District of Mauston Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) Directory Information The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), a federal law, requires the Mauston School District, with limited exceptions, to obtain your written consent before disclosure of personally identifiable information from your child’s school records. However, the Mauston School District may disclose appropriately designated “directory information” without written consent, unless you have notified the district otherwise in accordance with district procedures. The primary purpose of directory information is to allow the Mauston School District to include this type of information from your child’s school records in certain school publications. Examples include: – A poster, showing your student’s role in a drama production; – The annual directory; – Roll of Honor or other lists of recognition; – Graduation programs; and – Sports activity records, such as wrestling, showing weight and height of team members. Directory information, which is generally information that is not generally considered harmful or an invasion of privacy if disclosed, may also be disclosed to outside organizations without a parent’s prior written consent. Outside organizations include, but are not limited to, companies that manufacture class rings or publish yearbooks. In addition, two federal statutes require Local Education Agencies (LEAs) receiving assistance under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (ESEA) and reauthorized under the Every Student a Success Act of 2015 (ESSA ), to be provided to military recruiters, upon request, with the following information – names, addresses, and telephone numbers – unless parents have notified the LEA that they do not wish their student’s information to be disclosed without their prior written consent. If you do not want the Mauston School District to release your child’s school records directory information without your prior written consent, you must notify the district in writing by Friday, September 16, 2022.
